Имеется в виду деревянное судно, попавшее в шторм, когда ветер и волны заставляют его крениться на бок. Когда-то между бортами деревянного судна проходили массивные деревянные балки, которые обеспечивали устойчивость судна. Корабль в положении on its beams ends кренился на бок под большим углом.
